My New Years' holidays started at small hotel in Yamanashi prefecture. On it's way, we could watch beautiful Mt.Fuji glittering with white snow. All through our stay, Mt.Fuji was there, shining, snow capped. We enjoyed gorgeous traditional New Years' food in the morning. Having fun drinking night. Doing nothing but walking dogs. Pretty much refreshed, mentally and physically.

On the way back home, dropped by my bat cave and found huge amount of snow covered my new house. First thing I gotta do after quiet vacation was to remove bunch of snow out from the entrance approach. Big sweat.

Back to work on my house, after hectic first week of January. To place bearing wall on gable end, had to post pillars. To Install pillars, rafter supporting roof on outer wall side marked and measured. Top ends of pillars to be cut into slant ditch according to its gradient. And bottom end to be shaped to mortises as tenons already cut when beams were prepared.

Pillars finished on south side the first day. Replaced a grip of chisel the night. Very old chisel aquired at web auction about 3 years ago. It's head ring wore out and the grip body made of hard wood thinly cracked. The chisel was used by a retired shrine carpenter. Made by some blacksmith who apply same method as Japanese sword building. So the head consisted of soft and hard steel combined. Once sharpened, lasts almost three times longer than normal chisel. Not sold anymore. When it came to my hand, the head was badly rusted. Polished and sharpened, properly maintained since then.

Removing old grip took me certain while. Slowly turning its head and knocking its neck ring by flat hammer. Gradually the head walks out from the grip. Once removed, polished the stud leg. Before replacing its grip, removing head ring from new grip. Then hammer it's head to 'kill' the wood not to change its shape. It also means slightly smallen it's head to poke out a couple of millimeters from head ring. So that power properly conveyed when hammering the chisel grip. Head ring is just for protection. I would use this chisel till it'll wear out.

The next morning started with line drawing and cutting pillars on north side. All pillars planted by noon. Then measured out dimention for planting supporting pillars planted in between pillars. Measured and roughly cut supporting pillars and the time was up for the day.
