128A selfbuilder's note

My brother phoned me up on Tuesday. Decided we'll meet at Kyoto Friday night. Went to public spa then moved to my bat cave. By my wood stove side, we drank and talked about various topics till midnight.
He'll retire at the end of this month. Been working for UN since graduated from college at master degree. Mostly lived abroad. Stayed each location 5 years at longest. Many are nations pretty chaotic right after independent war or island nations remote from continents. At front line, been helping children's welfare for so many years. What he has been committed to must have been one of the toughest job I'm sure. I'm proud of my brother.

Now he's back to his home country. Planning to build a new house or renovate an old traditional house after retirement. I gave him a little tour of my new house. He was excited to look around details of my house in progress. As he visited my site last time when the concrete base was just finished. So he hasn't seen upper construction of the house since then. Like other people, he wasn't realized size of the house until things become tangible even though details were reported on my blog. It was fun watching him impressed when explaining each detail.

On his way back, we visited a small brewery of soy sauce and miso to buy rice covered with white mildews. Miso needs this rice for fermentation. Last several years, my wife and I have been making miso with this brewery's mildewed rice. As the brewery produces soy sauce, my miso tends to smell like soy sauce. Deep, wonderful fragrance. So I've recommended it to his wife.

Back to work. Filling space between pillars and roof bottom with leftover materials. Combined two different sticks perfectly filled the space and flushed with outside surface of the pillars. With filling the space, bearing boards can be installed up to contact line. By the time finishing placing spacers, snow started fall heavily. Driving up to public spa on a hilly place, snow was packed like northern countries.

Snow stopped falling next morning. About knee deep. Piled up high on the house side. Knowing how these snow affects peripheral area can be made use of protecting house.

Bringing up marked MDF boards to gable side. As gradient of roof set as 2:1. Means ratio of height is half of its width. So once measured any piece, a board next to the piece will be automatically calculated. So easy to mark. However, once come to installing cut boards, it's so heavy and has to work quite awkwardly. Beginning with lighter end piece felt easy. When installing the 3rd piece on west end south gable side, I felt strange on my lower back. So I quit the job for the day. Well, I should be careful as I have no substitute of myself.
